Pure chamber music heaven!’ was how the Gould Trio’s Wigmore Hall performance of Schubert’s great B flat piano trio was described in ‘The Times’. On tour in the USA, the Washington Post raved that they produce, ‘a musical fire that ignites from the very first bar.’

Launched by winning the first prize in the inaugural Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, the Goulds soon became regulars at the Wigmore Hall. They have performed complete cycles of the major canon of piano trios there, and in 2025 will return to this iconic venue with towering romantic masterpieces by Tchaikovsky and Saint-Saëns.

Recent recording projects include a two volume Schubert project for  Resonus Classics and a survey of the piano trios and piano quartets of the neglected early romantic opera composer, Heinrich Marschner for Naxos.

The annual summer ‘Corbridge Chamber Music Festival’ has always been a highlight of their musical calendar where, together with the inspiringly innovative clarinettist Robert Plane, they are joined by musical friends to explore a huge range of repertoire. Over the past quarter of a century they have welcomed guest composers who have written works especially for them, such as Sir James MacMillan, Huw Watkins, Mark Simpson and John Casken. In 2025 they welcome back Piers Hellawell with a new work, ‘The Rising of Sirius’.

In recent seasons the trio have given master classes at the Guildhall School of Music, sharing their passion for chamber music with the next generation of performers. The Gould’s have explored the rich repertoire of the English romantics in concert and in the recording studio, championing the works of York Bowen, Arnold Bax, Stanford, John Ireland, Rebecca Clarke. Future projects include the premier of a new piano trio by Joseph Phibbs at the Wigmore Hall.
